“NOA001:
ALL PROCEEDS GO TOWARDS FURTHER 151 ACTIVITIES/PROJECTS
We're very proud to share our very first musical document, a series of aural snapshots offering a visceral insight into moments shared by an improv music community that had nestled itself within the K Road music underground between 2016-2017.
The 151 community initially held its improv nights namely at 151 Karangahape Road in Auckland's downtown (formerly known as Fuzzy Vibes) - an important hub for musicians, artists and visitors throughout its tenure who curated/attended art exhibitions and music events there. During 151's residency at 151 Karangahape Road many musicians and participants were treated regularly to a wide variety of improvisational experiences ranging from intimate to humorous, visceral to disciplined, patience-testing to interactive and various other engagements. In this environment came an energy of openness and experimentation forming a social/musical-incubator (not only for practiced musicians but more importantly for the extended community), often ending up with people who hadn't touched an instrument before jumping up to contribute to the conversation of the night.
From this understanding we fast-forward to 2017, when the community no longer held space at 151 K Road (during this year the shutdown of creative spaces was becoming an increasing symptom of gentrification). 151 Improv nights held a temporary residency at Lowtide in St. Kevins Arcade before moving to The Grow Room in Samoa House for their most recent residency, during which time this project was experienced and recorded.
This project focusses on the bands and players featured throughout 151's residency at The Grow Room, we hope that the essence of these nights can be communicated to you through the music captured, telling you an emotive story through listening more than words can express…
